Hookworms are small worms that fit into the wall of the intestine lining and feed on blood from the intestines wounds.  Hookworms are dangerous to all dogs and can kill infested puppies before being detected. It is very important to check for hookworms on a regular basis as hookworms are very contagious to other animals and also to humans making them zoonotic. Hookworms are picked up through the environment; there eggs are released in the faeces of an infected dog. Symptoms of hookworm in the dog may include anaemia, and bloody diarrhoea. Humans may be infected with hookworm by ingesting or touching soil or sand that has been contaminated.  Common symptoms of hookworm in humans include itching; they penetrate and move through the skin and cause summer eczema. It is very important to maintain good hygiene in order to eliminate hookworms. Hookworms will be killed by worming drugs available from the veterinary surgery.  The management of hookworm is extremely important because of how harmful hookworms are; it is extremely significant as it could saves dogs lives.
